Re: any good ideas on how to avoid underwater objects?

The only way I know of to avoid those things is to go slow and learn the water ways you plan to travel on. Otherwise slow down and "LOOK WHERE YOU ARE GOING  !!!" Sometimes those things that end up in the water can't be avoided. The first few weeks of spring are always the worst as well as after very heavy rain fall, stuff gets washed into the water and there is nothing you can do about them.

+1. Good polarized glasses are a must and the higher you can get the better too. I use a tiller extender which lets me sit/stand as needed which has increased my vision greatly over the standard tiller, and is very handy in shallow water. A small raised tower/helm is also popular down here in FL to help folks see fish and other underwater objects.

NMZ in flight.AVI - YouTube (tiller gran bar set up which is very popular down here in FL. I run a similar set up myself.)

BTW, MultiBeam sonar is the way to go if you have the money. It wouldn't be able to shoot out in front but it does sweep an area under the boat equal to 5x the water depth. Out in the ocean operating at 1,000 feet deep you can see high resolution images of the sea floor up to a mile wide. shallow waterways not quite as wide but still impressive. 10 feet deep you can still see a 50ft swath of the bottom.

Great for finding fishing holes I suppose but if you have that kind of money you may be doing serious commercial fishing operations. Check out this site, it has some amazing multibeam images of a ship that is resting in peace.

Edit: I came on too strong.

Guys we do try and keep responses to old threads down to a minimum. That's why we have the red bar. This is especially important with technical threads as no one knows who and when we are responding to.

Old Post I know, slow down and if you are running an aluminum boat, you can put a coat of the silicon type paint/coating that are used on air boats. I did a lot of white-water paddling, (and more than a few thousands of miles of flat water). Aluminum sticks to rocks, and then does not move at all, while running rapids that is really bad, compared to the newer style royalex/plastic canoes that just slide off of rocks. Not a perfect solution, but have spent many days playing in rock gardens, this is what I plan to do with the hull of my 18 ft camp boat, for exploring new water in Canada. Pack a good set of hull repair material, to get you back if you mess up. Then learn to go slower.
