Hi all!

I have a 17' sailboat fixer-upper that I have decided that I do not have the time or energy to fix-up.

As it is stored at my in-laws, I need to get the boat out of there ASAP. (Southern/Central Jersey shore)

I have heard that there may be some value for the mast and sails... Should I junk the whole thing (mast and sails included), or should I try to sell them?

I dont know the condition of the sails, but the mast seems OK... Aluminum...

I am unsure of the make/model of the boat... Previously, I was told it might be a "Flying Scot"

Here is a link to pics of the boat:

Thanks for any and all advice... I feel terrible about dumping the boat, but I dont know how else to dispose of it, and I dont have the time to get down there to even attempt a sale...

Very little market for old rigging unless you get lucky and find someone who needs exactly what you have.
Call a scrap yard and ask them the price for aluminium. You might get $50-80, but you'd have to haul it to their yard. Then you'll have to do something with the hull....

Hey, if you don't want to take the time to sell it, why don't you GIVE the boat away? There are plenty of places that would take it, and you'd get a tax deduction.
If even THAT is too much work for you, just put it out at the road and list it on the "free" section of your local Craigslist along with your address. It'll be gone within the first hour.

I don't quite agree with that point of view. Before you convert a mast into beer cans check around your area. Put up an ad at SailingTexas [national coverage] ( http://www.sailingtexas.com ) and Craigslist. Good bet that mast will adapt to most boats in the size range from Luger, Hobie-Holder Monohull 14 or 17, Hunt 5.2, Capri, Lido, the smaller West Wright Potters, or something somebody is building from plans. It would be a lifesaver to anyone who's boat has had storm or accident damage. A new mast would run $400 - $600 and you could save the day for, say, $150 or so. (same with all the boat's fittings - if the hull is junk - your rudder, if in servicable condition, could fetch ~$200)

Take exact measurements of the cross-section and bolt-rope track. Prop it on horses and shoot a couple of photos, one down the length to show straightness (or not) - be honest; show the base cap and mast head sheaves. Will you be including the tabernacle bracket?

Focus your search in your local area within about 200 mi since shipping often doubles the price - it ain't goin' UPS, that's for sure - most likely a pick-up at your house by the buyer.

I hope you find someone in need so then two of you are happy with the outcome. ;)

Put the ad on Craigslist for the whole boat and trailer for $300 or something. It will be gone in a few days. Make sure you have decent pictures.

Sell it all together.
In your area there may be lots of sailboats.
In the SW a small boat like that would go pretty fast. Its fine with a little work. I bet I could sail it just like it is.

I agree with everyone else, sell the whole thing for two three hundred dollars on craigslist or trailer sailor, the trailer alone is worth that.
