Re: Anti-Theft Devices

i use a tounge ball lock and a master lock. if they really want it they are gonna have to work fairly hard. and also i keep it fully insured, so if they really want it they can have it and i'll go shopping for a new boat!

it will tow just fine, with those chains cinched up tight. far enough to get away to cut and bust the locks.

Re: Anti-Theft Devices

A friend uses a 1/2" plastic coated steel cable that he feeds through the wheel, frame, spring, fender and locks it together behind the wheel. The way he has it setup, the wheel can not be replaced, unbolted yes, but they would never be able to get another wheel on there,,, unless they cut the lock or cable. He positions the lock in back of the tire which makes it more difficult to cut the lock. This saved his trailer once as he noticed the lug nuts were off and tire jammed as far out as the thief could manage. (the plastic coated cable keeps the wheel and trailer from getting beaten up as chain would)

I've heard of people getting their trailer stolen because of bolt-on couplers. All the thief needed to do was unbolt the coupler and put on a new one. I always weld a few spots on the coupler for safety's sake.

On my swing tongue trailer I keep the tongue chained back against the trailer frame and the hinge pin locked in place, wheel cabled also....

Like the others have said, get a good lock for the coupler and maybe lock and chain for one of the wheels. Check with the storage place to see if they have video cameras and recorders. If they do, find out how long they keep the information. If they say a month just check the boat every couple of weeks to make sure everything is OK. Also ask them if you can look the the video monitors to make sure your boat is in a location that is being monitored and recorded.
