Anti freeze vs draining

What I have found, is that after the block has drained completely, I introduce antifreeze, and it pushes more water out of he block and manifold drains.

So if you just drain it, that water remains.

Obviously the residual water will freeze, over the winter. The question is whether it will damage anything.

I choose to fill the block with antifreeze, to be sure the residual water doesn't damage anything.

You pays your money, you takes your chances....

....After all other winterizing has been completed.... remove the block and manifold drain plugs ( 1of each on an inline motor, 2 of each on a V engine) on the motor and let the water drain. Pour straight antifreeze into the large waterpump hose, until you see the color at one block drain. Install that drain plug. Continue to add antifreeze until you see it at the other drain (v engine only) Install the remaining drainplug and fill the block with straight A-F....

Unless I'm missing something, I only have one drain plug, on the port side lower part of the block. It's a 307 V8. Would there be another place to look? I drained almost 2 gallons from the block two days ago.

Fred, In my experience with American engines, most V6/8 engines have a drain on each side of the block. I am not sure who makes a 307CID engine, but I would consult a service manual to be sure there are no additional drain plugs.

Chevrolet made the 307. It's a 2-bolt 283 with a 327 crankshaft, in a nutshell. They made it to replace the 283 and be an economical engine, from '67-73, IIRC. My buddy had one in his '69 Nova. The biggest complaint with the engine was that they didn't use a hardened camshaft so, when they lost power, guys usually just chucked the engine and dropped in something else. There are a few tricks you can do to wake this thing up and make it go. I'm happy with mine, since it only has 163hrs on it. Maybe down the road.....

I'll take a look again, I may have missed the other plug.

Factory service manual is on Santa's list.

Thanks, Chris.
