Hello all,

I have just joined this forum. I purchased this boat last November and this spring is the first time i have had it in the water. I have an issue with a vibration in my Penta 270. The vibration only occurs when the engine is in gear and under power. In gear at idle I dont feel much of anything. I out of the water with muffs on and in gear the outdrive does not shake and no vibration is detected. The 125aq engine runs smooth and reaches a full 4500 RPM at full speed. I did notice a pin hole leak in the drive bellow. First water came out, then a mixture of water and oil. I read many post and thought my U-joints might have gone bad. So I removed the outdrive. The drive shaft is not rusty, nor does it feel like the U-joints have any play in them, they move smoothly as well. All bearings in the upper gear box feel tight and move smoothly. The prop was rebuilt and balanced prior to my purchase. The prop shaft shows no signs of being bent. Everything spins freely. I have not gone any farther in my tare down, I spun the prop shaft and looked down at the intermideate shift it appears to spin true and does not look bent. The shaft coming out of the back of the engine feels tight when grabbed and lifted up and down, side to side. I should note the vibration is very noticeable. The windshield shakes, everything shakes. I am unsure what might be the problem from here. I plan on replacing the U-joints, bellow (of course) and the Gimbal bearing. I have it tore down this far might as well do it. Any help would be welcomed. Oh, I also have 1/8" play in the steering at the outdrive.

IF you had a hole in the ujoint bellows, then you need ujoints. Since you have oil in the bellows too, that means you have water in the drive, pusing the oil out.
Since you have the drive off, put water to the raw water pump and run the engine and see if it vibrates or makes noise. IF it does, the bearings in the flywheel housing are bad and you need to pull the engine and replace them. If all quiet. Then you have problems on the drive side.
You could have saved your self a lot of work by only removing the upper gear box and not the complete drive.
