Was pouring out a pint of resin into a plastic mixing tub and noticed that there were chunks of gel in the bottle. Wondering if anyone else has seen this before.

how old is the resin? whats the temp of the resin? I have seen that when the resin was too cold and warming it up fixed the issue..

Is this polyester resin? It could be really old. Haven't seen this with epoxy, but then again, I just started using epoxy this past summer.

From what I've read, polyester resin is always hardening, even without the catalyst being mixed in. The catalyst just speeds things up. So old poly resin can and does go "bad".

Old resins, especially previously opened containers thicken or get clumpy. In fact, resins if given a long enough time will cure on their own with out the hardener. The hardener just speeds things up from months to minutes.

It's polyester resin. Temp is in the mid 60's so don't think that temp should be a factor. I don't know how old it is but assuming it's within it's shelf life. I've been getting my resin from a local boat repair shop and he fills my 1 gallon jugs from their 55 gallon drum. They make the claim that I don't have to worry about getting resin that's old by buying from them and I have no reason to not believe them. I will ask about the expiration date tomorrow when I go back to get a couple more gallons. I'll also rinse the jugs out with acetone and let them air out before going.

Luckily, this batch was for a sealing coat without mat or cloth on the deck boards that have been cut so far.
