Good to know about the prop!! I'm sure things will change a bit too once it's in the water under load.

So I got the ignition switch picked up and "attempted" the wiring lol

There are only 3 posts on the one I got and per Mercury it replaces what I have. I am a little confused on what should go where.

OLD SWITCH 4 POST

A - Red wire
B - White wire
C - Yellow wire from "switch"
I - Black wire

NEW SWITCH 3 POST

A - Red wire
B - White wire
S - ??? I put Black here

My question is where does the Yellow "switch" wire need to go. I touched it to the empty terminal on the ignition switch and the motor fired up. I touched it to the "S" terminal and motor fires up when turning key. Only problem is it won't shut off :confused:

Without the "switch" in the system it would not start. Can this be bypassed? If not, how does it hook up?

Thats why I used the switch from the 50....
OK first, the wire that goes from the + side of the rectifier(red I think in your harness), has to be connected directly to the battery. You can do this two ways.
Either splice in to it,and hook it up to the battery post, or disconnect it from the rectifier, make up a new wire, and hook it up to the starter solinoid on the battery side.
Now the white wire, (it has power on it from the battery) it must be hooked up to the "common" terminal of the switch. (this is the one that with the key off, is not connected to either of the other terminals). The black wire must be hooked up the terminal that first has continuity from the "common" terminal
when the switch is turned to the run possition. The last wire, comming from the soliniod, goes to the last terminal. This it the terminal, that has continuity
with the common terminal, only when the key is turned to the start position.
The grey wire, from the choke switch, gets hooked up to the white wire terminal.
It may be a bit hard figuring out which terminal is the "common" one. My bet is "B". I would hook it up with white on B, Yellow on S, and black on A, but ohm it out first, and find out, there are only 9 possible combinations.

Ok I was off on the terminal labels...but I think it makes sense.

B
S
I

So with looking at the wiring diagram and using what you said I'm going to hook it up as follows.

RED - splice and go + to Battery
B - WHT
S - ORG (you said yellow but orange in my harness)
I - BLK

Blue wire out of the harness to choke button
Jumper wire from other choke terminal to "B" terminal on ign switch

And if I'm assuming correctly (which hardly ever happens lol) this will allow me to bypass the "switch" thingy in the control box correct? Also what is the point of that contraption?

Contingent on the weather I should be able to get this done tomorrow night. I'll let you know how it goes :)

hi hardtailcfl or fuzzytbay. i know this is kind of old but this may be my problem too. i have spark but not on all cylinders and it started fine when i picked it up. my youngest was mulling around in the boat and accidently knocked the control box off (the wood it was mounted on was shot) i'm going to look at the control box tonight.

my question is, how did you use muffs for testing? i don't see where to place them and using a barrel is kind of a pain.
