Another "Joe Reeves" method question...

If I know without a doubt the TDC mark on my 1994 Johnson 90hp v4 Crossflow flywheel is accurate because I checked it to make sure.
Can I use the "Joe Reeves" method to verify timing on this motor?

I disconnected the cables.
I opened it up to where the carburetors are fully open, the roller in the slotted area in picture below is fully bottomed out at the top of the slot - the picture is not mine - mine is completely bottomed out at the top of the slot where I have circled in red.

If I'm completely bottomed out there at the top of the slot, it's there where I crank the motor and check my timing mark and if the manual says 28° BTDC, I set the timing at 24 degrees before TDC , correct?

I know this may sound like a stupid question. I'm becoming less confident in my old age. 😊

I really can't see how I can get any more WOT if I'm up tight against the top of the slot.

I am going to be blunt here.---Only if throttle plates are not horizontal at full throttle,----Take a good look at linkages to see where adjustments can be made.----But do not adjust anything if you are unsure.

Throttle Plates are horizontal - they are fully open when I bottom out at the very top of the slot.

The only reason I'm looking at the timing is as l mentioned in another thread, I feel like this motor isn't reaching it's full power.

Using the Joe Reeves method, I was setting at 18 degrees before TDC, when I should be at 24. Motor specs is 28, so I should be at 24 with "Joe Reeves" method.

I'll have time Monday to verify if the flywheel is still correctly lined up with the woodruff key.

I also did the piston stop procedure where you turn the flywheel until it stops, make a mark, and then again on the upstroke. Then measure the distance in half for true TDC.
I just want to be too advanced to cause harm.
I double check everything and just put it on 24 degrees BTDC.
It just seemed odd it was on 18 BTDC.

I checked the flywheel to verify it's groove lined up with the key in the shaft. Looks good.

I then re-verified the TDC mark on the flywheel lines up correctly with the pointer when I am at true TDC.

I advanced the throttle linkage as far as it will go. The roller in the slot is tight against the top of the slot. It's also tight against the over throttle stop. And both the butterflies in the carburetors are fully horizontal.

I set the cranking timing as per Joe Reeves method of 24 degrees BTDC (4 degrees less than the shop manual specification of 28). Actually, I went with 23 degrees BTDC just because there is some debate as to detonation with ethanol tainted gasoline.

The roller on the throttle linkage lines up with the mark on the cam.

I hope to start it up this Friday and make sure the butterflies just barely begin to open at around 4 to 6 degrees BTDC.
