Another Islander project (maybe)

Hello, I just found this forum searching for parts for my Starcraft Islander and seen all of the great projects that some of the members have undertaken. Now I would like to pick the brains of these project managers, or anyone else that may have an answer. Kind of long, please bear with me.

Current boat is an '84 Islander 221V with the Merc 140 I/O, Alpha outdrive (small Alpha). It is in poor shape, the previous owner did many things to disguise problems when I came to look at it, some were apparent, others not. The motor has since been replaced, impellor too. So the drive train is in great shape, now for the rest of the boat...the floor, which had been laid over the original rotting floor, is going bad fast. There are quite a few loose rivets also, a couple broken too. The hull isn't in that bad of shape, just the ugly brown, I think the original factory paint color was Baby Pooh Brown.

I have found an '87 221V that had a 4.3 in it, OMC outdrive. It needs the transom wood replaced and the first foot or so of flooring replaced near the cowling, just on the starboard rear. Motor was sold and the coupler too, outdrive still intact, but I have no use for it. The cabin, flooring, hull, etc... everything is in much better condition than the rest of my boat.

So here's my question, if I replaced the transom wood will my 140 Merc and Alpha use the same mounting pattern/hole in the transom as the 4.3/OMC or would I need to replace the transom aluminum piece as well? Could I use the transom from the 84 on the 87? This would make a great winter project as I will only be fishing the river in my smaller boat for the rest of this year.

Hey Fisk, welcome!

Let's see if I can get what you are thinking...

You have an Islander, rough shape, good motor.

There is an Islander for sale, better shape than yours, still needs a transom rebuild, minus the motor.

Does that sound about right?

As for your motor match up question I'll leave that to the pros, though I think it will fit just fine. You may have a couple of extra bolt holes that you won't use???????? Idonno, but someone will post up and let you know for sure.

As for buying another rig and transplanting the motor, I suppose more info would be needed on that...

How much for the new hull?
How much work does the new hull really need (if the transom is bad the deck is likely bad too - and if that stuff is bad, what else needs work)?
How much could you sell your old hull for?
Will you do the engine/drive swap or will the pros do that (money)?

I think we'd really need some photos to give you some good advice but my gut is telling me that you might be better off rebuilding what you already have??? Maybe???

Unless....

You just sell your rig altogether, buy the new rig (at the right price), fix what needs fixen and install new/rebuilt/used motor and drive.

Or....

Sell your rig, buy new/used rig with motor and drive (at the right price).

Or....

Run away from the insanity now before it's too late for you! There is no hope for us, save yourself!!!

Yup, we need some photos.

Cheers and welcome!

By the way, I like your location ID...

Detroit maybe?

Where more crime/evil comes from the Governor's mansion than does the streets?
