Firstly, thanks for all the great info on this site. This is my first posting but I have been helped many times previously. This one however, has me beat.

I have recently aquired an Evinrude 3 cyl 1984 motor which runs great at WOT. The problem is it won't idle and sometimes dies when throttle is applied.
Symptoms are;
1. If revs are applied, sometimes goes but sometimes dies. Pushing choke very briefly will cause a brief fade-out but then revs increase and runs great.
Priming bulb remains firm and squeezing does not help.
Engine wont idle below about 1500rpm, or will for a short while then sputters and dies. Is worse in water than on hose.Pulling plug leads shows number three cylinder is not working at idle but spark is present and strong.
Plugs are clean and gapped at .040"
Quick check of carbie orifice plugs, they appear to be clear.

I'm thinking my first move is to remove and thoroughly clean carbs. Would this be right or am I missing the obvious?

Sorry for the long winded question, I did'nt want to miss anything.

Cheers,
Tim..

Re: another idling problem

You're on the right track pertaining to having fouled carburetors.

However, check the compression and spark first. Compression = approx 100+ psi and even on all cyls. Spark = jump a 7/16" gap with a wide strong blue spark.

If comp and spark are okay, clean and rebuild the carburetors.

Thanks Joe,
The spark is real good, jumps about an inch and a half and puts you on your *** if you're not insulated....Ouch!!
I thought compression was ok as I get very good WOT performance. I will have to get a gauge to check and will advise.
Geez it's fun learning stuff..

Tim..

Re: another idling problem

On a 2 stroke one of the signs of weak compression is that the idle quality suffers. WOT can be fairly good.

You blokes are too good.
I got myself a compression gauge and number three is low compared to the top two cylinders.
I did a wet test and it came back up so I guess it's time to pull the head and check the rings.

Thanks for your help.
Tim..
