So what's the deal... seems the straight 90W high-performance drive oil is hard to find at local stores? Their shelves seem to be packed with 80W-90. Yes, I know there's little difference between them.

Is 80W-90 the new normal for other folks too? I've always used the Quicksilver (yellow label) High Performance 90W. I can always get it from Amazon or other online sources. Sucks that local stores don't carry it anymore, or at least mine doesn't.

2001 Alpha One Gen II drive.

I avoid Walmart like the plague. Now more than ever since they've locked stuff up worse than Alcatraz! I will not step foot in that store unless it's an absolute must.

Maybe it's just my local stores that just aren't carrying the straight 90W anymore and carry the 80W-90 instead. I was curious if other people are seeing the same thing in their towns.

only use Yamaha lube products on my 2009 150 HP 4 stroke motor, not sure if that is the best product, but the OEM sure like it,, LOL,,

Yeah not my favorite place but I do get motor oil etc there. There are other places like the local marina but certainly not a ton of spots. I do think the local advanced auto or auto zone may have them too

You will likely be fine running 80W-90. I do think amongst marine gear lubes a straight 90w is a bid of an oddity, though.

I believe marine gear lube has some additives not found in std automotive gear lube. Maybe not... I'd stay with marine and what manual recommends.

they do have additives that are supposed to make it still lubricate in the presence of water. You can use automotive gear lube which also works fine except when it got water in it. I used to use Mobil 1 75w90 in my sea do jet pump instead of the OEM lube. If definitely was less tolerant to water intrusion than the marine lubes I have used like the Sea Doo XPS synthetic, Klotz, or the Merc Hi Perf lube.

The sea doo xps at $20 per 6 oz is insane, but the klotz for $7.50 / 6 oz and Merc Hi perf at $15 qt are fine

Being that Marine Engines have such small Gears, the Marine Gear Oils may contain more EP additives to reduce the Wear on the smaller Contact Areas of those Gears.

I have used Merc/Quicksilver High Performance gear oil in my Cobra on my previous mechanic’s recommendation and it has kept it shifting like new for 20 years, all salt water use.

Proper marine gear oil is cheap compared to gears / bearings and shafts.----If no water gets in it is good for 3 seasons for most folks.

I could not find a S A E rating different than 90W or 80 90W
Gear oils are ALL supposed to only be in SEALED gear boxes.
All other great sales words are just that.

A lot of Marine Gear Lubes are 75

No, Every Diff I have ever had was Vented, thus not Sealed.
Ask anyone who ever submerged the Diff and Vent Hose at the Boat Launch, they usually were replacing Bearings within a few Weeks

My Bravos have lube reservoirs that gravity feed gear oil to OD. I don't think reservoir is sealed other than a cap, which has a hole in it so it can breath.

???----Are you sure on the $4.69 / oz -----Seems 1 US gallon would be 132 X $4.69 I think.-----An imperial gallon would be 160 X $4.69

This calculation is incorrect

1.32 x 128 = 168.96 fl Oz

$36 ÷ 168.96 = $0.213 per fl Oz

Your math equates to:

$4.69 x 168.69 = $792.42 for 5 litres (1.32 us gal)
