I've done a little poking around in here but haven't found a similar situation and I want to know what y'all think.
Background on boat: This boat was built in '61 by my grandfather and great-grandfather so there is a lot of sentimental value there. This one is called "the 227". 22' 7" LOA. They built several of these boats in varying lengths and even built a 32' of the same hull design for racing. This particular on was the first one they built. It is an all wood, step-chine design. Originally this boat had only a single layer of cloth covering the bottom wood below the water line. In the 90's (when I was a kid) the bottom was re-done and covered in fiberglass. When this was done, they made slight designs to the shape of the bottom by adding layers of CSM to "soften" the chines. We used to use this boat for all kinds of things from fishing, both inshore and longer offshore trips, hunting, exploring and generally cruising around.
It is now my turn with "the 227". She is in pretty good shape considering. Half the work is going to be digging it out of storage. There are a couple soft spots on the floor that I wanted to check out. I cut some places out to find only the decking to have issues. there is 1 stringer that was not rotten but it was broken in a few places. everywhere I can see and touch the inside feels and looks good from the inside.
My question is this: Do I rip out the entire floor and replace even what seems good, or do I patch the spots where the decking is bad? Either way I go, the carpet is coming out. There is so much dirt embedded in this stuff, id feel sorry to abuse a shop-vac like that! haha
Also, what are your recommendations for the decking after repaired/replaced? Paint it, or what??
Thanks in advance!
