I realize that this is beating a dead horse and apologize for it, but...

I just purchased a boat with the subject engine. I did so because the engine has about 160hrs and runs great...and because I had not read this forums many posts on the injector problems.

From another post, I will be able to check for the pins in the head. I do not know if I have an upgraded version or not at this time.

If I do have pins in the head, are there more than one type of upgrade i.e. 2001 heads vs. modified? How do I tell?

Does the fact that the engine has high hours indicate that I may not have the injector problems known so well?

Thanks for any help.
Allan

Allan,

Thanks for providing the serial number. I was able to access the engines warranty history and it shows the pinned cylinderheads and programming were installed in Aug 1998. There were no other upgrades for that model engine after the cylinderhead kit.

-John

That engine should be good for a while. Just 160 hours is a good break-in! Keep freah plugs in it (I do mine every 100 hours) and she should work fine for years. I am not aware of significant injector problems. Someone was selling new ones on ebay for $25 each and there were no takers at such a bargain price. Conversely, a set of lightly used NGK $park plugs were a hot item. Go figure!

Re: Another '98 Johnson 150 Ficht Question

I bought a '98 Johnson Ficht motor, I was wondering where I would find the model numbers. The stickers seemed to have been removed, the only sticker on the motor were the engine family number, the spark plug number, and the engine display. The numbers for the engine family are WIPXMO158221, and WIPXMO158220. Help would be appreciated, thank you.

To get the most life from the 98-99 fichts you need to do the following:
(1) Run the XD50 oil, as carbon is the killer on these engines
(2) Run a good fuel additive about every 150 gallons to flush injectors
(3) Pinned heads if not already updated
(4) Run the correct spark plugs: Champion XC12PEP plug
(5) Disconnect onboard charger from starting battery if equipped
(6) Replace wing nuts on motor cables with washers and lock nuts.
