Sleeves are on. Time to remove the flanges. Do I need to remove the flange on the rear seal?

I am ready to install the harmonic balancer. Can I lube the inside of the balancer to help the process along?

The rotor is held on by a bolt and key, so lube should be OK.

What is the torque spec on the balancer bolt? I assume that is the alternator rotor bolt - 75 lb. ft., right?

Re: Another 470 Leaking Coolant

Got the balancer on with an installer tool and about 10 greased washers. I greased the inside of the balancer and it went on pretty smoothly.

Now my problem is that I don't know exactly where to stop. Will it bottom out like it does on cars? Th directions say about .10" from the engine, but where would I measure? I am about 1/16" from the timing marks, but more than .10" from the rest of the cover.

Just tighten the bolt till it bottoms against the crankshaft end, torque it, as long as the rotor does not hit the cover you will be OK.

Yeah, just torque her down till it bottoms out on the crankshaft, then torque her down to the recommended specs.

Haha it was only about a quarter turn from bottoming out. Thanks Guys.

I have everything together and ready to go but it is too late to start it in my neighborhood. I will run it on muffs tomorrow and let you know how it goes.

HOLY SH&T!!! Where's the Tylenol?!

Complete and utter failure!!! I tried to start it today and I must have done something very wrong. Listen to this --

Something is grinding terribly and it won't even come close to starting. It will turn but just keeps making that sound. It ran perfectly (except for slight dripping from the weep hole) before I embarked on this cluster fu#^.

And as an added kick in the nuts -- IT IS LEAKING FROM THE WEEP HOLE AGAIN!! FASTER THAN BEFORE I TRIED TO FIX IT.

Re: Another 470 Leaking Coolant

Well, I got everything apart and it looks like I really screwed the pooch. The stud that holds the impeller on was bent and the impeller was catching on the impeller cover. I think I bent it by over torquing when installing the impeller. You can see the the gauges in the picture.

Being stuck like that while I was trying to turn the engine over must have screwed something else up. I turned it over without the impeller, timing cover, harmonic balancer, and stator and it made the same terrible grinding sound as the video above.

Any idea what I might have done to this thing?

Re: Another 470 Leaking Coolant

Could be the solenoid, because the battery charge is down. Or maybe the starter gear not engaging. Try charging the battery and give it another try. Keep your fingers crossed. Get a new stud #14 here https://www.mercruiserparts.com/Sho...39469.png&inbr=908&bnbr=170&bdesc=FRONT+COVER i think you loctite it in, better check, the impeller tightens on the stud, so you don't have to tighten it much. Might as well pull the cover and check the sleeves and seals while you are at it. Don't get discouraged, I've done way worse, and it worked out.

Re: Another 470 Leaking Coolant

Thanks Terry. I am not quite as PO'd a few hours later. I pulled the timing cover and everything looks fine, including the sleeves. I am not sure why they leaked coolant so quickly. It wasn't leaking before I turned the key, then about 20 seconds later it was leaking about as fast as it could thru the weep hole. I guess enough pressure built up just by trying to start it. If I get lucky with the grinding noise and the new impeller stud, should I replace the sleeves and seals again?

Tough one! I would think the sleeves would be ok. The seals, take a close look at them with a magnifier use your best judgement. Guess I might be inclined to change them, but you are getting pretty good at taking it apart and putting it back together so might just try it again.:D

Re: Another 470 Leaking Coolant

I put a charger on the battery. If she turns OK in the morning I will install a new gasket and seal set and see how it goes. If I am not evacuated because of all these fires, I should be able to get most of it done tomorrow after work.

Re: Another 470 Leaking Coolant

OK. Two batteries fully charged and here is what I get.

Does it still sound like the solenoid? I did arch a little while reconnecting the negative cable (wrench hit positive post), but the Perko switch was in Off/Lock position.

Man that is ugly. Sounds like the starter gear is not fully engaging or something. I think it is time to pull the starter and take a look. Sorry:grumpy:

Re: Another 470 Leaking Coolant

That sounds terrible. I think I'd pull the spark plugs and turn the engine by hand just to make me feel better.... Then..... relaxed... I look into the starter.

If it happens to be the starter, just think... it could have happened while on the water.

If it is starter issues, you can rebuild it, or replace it. Terry at one time had the part numbers down.
