Hello, Although just honing my building skills on smaller craft before the 32' get's built, I've been experimenting with dyeing wood using aniline dye to add some dimension to the finish. Although doing it on a small scale with kayaks, are there any pitfalls to doing it on a large scale? (ie, a 32' sailboat) Specifically I was wondering about at least doing the deck only, not the entire hull. I used the procedure I found here with good results. The only thing I found was the darker you go, the more of the weave of the glass you see. Anyone done a large scale dye project? Here's what I have, (on a small scale) :)

Gr?? Gott !

Welcome to iboats!

WOW that is some beautiful work you have done. I have never done any wood dying but those results look great.

I have some experiance with aniline but it was related to explosives work in a lab..... it's nasty stuff but, most stuff in the lab is.

There is a plywood manufacturing company close to me that makes colored laminates. The process they use makes the wood hard as steel and it can be buffed with a wheel to a luster. Rutland Plywood Corp (www.rutply.com) and they use dyes and very bright colors. I do not know specifically what they use but the dymonwood is colored all the way through and not just on the surface.

Once again welcome to iboats! Hopefully there is someone here who knows more about large scale dye projects.
