. . . and I Thought Hi-tech Boat Engines Were Bad . . .

I’ve never wrenched on a BMW much. But seems I remember someone who loves them saying the modules need to be registered to the car via dealer software. That can be required with a battery change, so if some lost power it could mean a trip to the dealer
GM and Toyota have had similar issues over the years

Yes, if/when you change the battery, there is a 'registration' process which basically tells the computer that the battery is new and to use a 'new' battery charging profile. As the battery ages, the charging profile adjusts since the battery typically does not charge as well.

the word hypercomplexification comes to mind.

There is also a special sensor on the negative battery cable that senses if the battery is having issues. If/when the battery is below certain parameters, it tells the computer not to start the car.

That was one of the first things I checked when diagnosing my no-start situation.

All seems like overkill . . .

Knowledge is power.....Welcome to the world of computer automation and controls.....lol

We log on average 1 gig of data every 24 hours with a 5 day roll over.

All internal and external interactions with level I and level II computers are time and date stamped. As is every internal communication, voltage, DIO, AIO and Operator input.

All designed, configured, built and supported by "old guys", so it's possible for old guys to learn new tricks...lol

Logging in from pool side to support a customer Sunday afternoon, yes, we are 24/7/365, beats the heck out of getting on a plane to go look for a loose wire or a stuck or burnt relay as was done in the past

Well, I did a couple iterations of clearing codes and re-scanning. So, this is the net of the current codes. Only 8 issues, down from 170 . . . the Carly app still thinks that's 'Bad'. What, no credit for good progress? :ROFLMAO:

I just picked up a 2010 Buick Enclave for affordable $$$----All the bells and whistles.----Nice looking car , very little rust.--Said I would never buy a car with 3 timing chains and variable valve cams.----But here I am doing the complete brake rotor and pad replacement.----Hoping to get some good miles out of it and that nothing goes " boom " on it.----Could not resist the price with 4 new Michelins on it already.

“Why make it simple when it could be complicated?”
Seems to be their design philosophy

Pretty common. Even my 2019 F150 has that (called Battery Management System). The manual says you need to take it to a dealer to get the BMS reset when you buy a new battery! (Of course, there are non-dealer work-arounds, but still...)

So does the scanner tell you exactly what the issues are?

I get a fault code, the description, and the mileage when it occurred.

By example, here is what I am seeing for the 4 remaining engine faults. Not sure why the App (Carly) has not cleared them.

for a business, I would want to have feedback and overwatch, etc. within reason.

in my car, I dont even want ABS, traction control, power windows, locks or an automatic...... prefering the visceral response of matching revs on a twisty road and the smell of the front tires on the edge of adhesion.

Is that the infamous 3.6, with Elastic Timing Chains? One of my Caddies has that engine, and the chains were supposedly changed under warranty a few years back. Rotors and Pads are aren't too pricy, but the rotors are throwaway items

Quick Update . . .

It looks like I have the 8 fault codes as being persistent, meaning they are still there/reappear after clearing.
  • One of them is the gas cap probably not doing its anti-venting thing properly.
  • Another is something about the radiator shutter mechanism not working properly (who wouldda knew that the radiator has shutters  )
  • I'm still checking the others.

The clarey will do the battery registration ...since you disconnected the cables it might be wise to re register the battery... When in reg just select same as old battery...if you choose new it only has a couple choices 90 amp or 105 amp..kid at shop has bmw...he uses clarey at home and on the road regularly... Some of the China made scanners for bmw are scary.bidirectional, programmers

You could just put a bit of tape over the "check engine" light and forget about it.....

CEL does not come on, has never come on, so these faults all seem ‘noise‘ level, not critical

I am a BMW fan, but not the newer ones!
They got too complex for their own damn good starting around 2005-6 IMO.
My current Bimmer is an E39 2001 530i Sport with a 5 speed. Have had it for 16 years now. Really loved the 540 but they get poor mileage and don’t handle as well as the 6. I consider it the original Sport Sedan. Hell, Car and Driver named it the best car ever tested in (I think) 2002. Even back then they were over-engineered, but only the mechanicals, not the electronics.

My ride has some Dinan goodies and now has the same HP as the stock V8 without the weight penalty. Sure parts are pricey, but I NEVER, EVER take it to the Stealership! There are plenty of shops around that work on these cars without having the ‘snooty’ attitude and high shop rate. I intend to keep mine until I can no longer drive.
