+1 to MM's comments about the swivel . . . between chain & anchor. The issue being that the swivel will not be able to go through the Windlass gypsy. I was trying to figure something out in that regard (some sort of right-sized and flexible swivel that would pass through the windlass, because I'd like to add a second swivel to my rode.

Even though I have the swivel that was mentioned, it tends not to swivel enough when I let out lots of line via the windlass. Therefore it has a tendency to jamb up on the way back in. IF I keep the amount of rode that is let out to about 40 feet, it is fine.

Swivel goes between chain and anchor. You have to have a rope to chain splice between the rope and chain parts of your rode.

Where are you in Canada? I was just in Ontario and Quebec on The Rideau, Ottawa River and St. Lawrence River.

Ok, between chain and anchor it will be.

I am near Montreal.
I also was on the Ottawa River from Montreal to Ottawa last week end, left on Friday and back on Monday.
We went looking at the fireworks anchored in a bay, visited the parliament and casino by boat.
It was my first boat trip. Lucky for me, I was with 3 other boats, so I got some training and occasions to practice. (I am a 1.5 month old newbie).

tpenfield, in my case, I don't have a gypsy.
I think my 'winch' is an aftermarket unit, it is hidden in the rode well, and far from the link chain/anchor, so the swivel will never get close to the sprocket.

A note about untwisting the rode. GOOD (my windlass manufacturer) recommends detaching the anchor, paying out all the rode (rope end first), then letting the boat drift for awhile. Reverse the rode (chain end out this time), feed the rope end into the windlass and do it again. Now retrieve the rode and attach the anchor. It was pretty easy and eliminated the "coils".
