Windlas FTW...

:D

I think certain scenarios call for different responses. In my area of boating you won't see many anchors tossed out and left alone. It's a narrow river with not much room to be leaving anchors.

Down at the sound the anchors I see are moorings, and usually more perminant than being put in the water for hours at a time.

Funny... This thread all of a sudden reminded me of putting a quarter on the Asteroids game or a stack of quarters on a pool table.

Move those quarters and there's gonna be a fight.

We use buoys on our anchor lines all the time, especially when we're tarpon fishing, you have zero time to be pulling it up in the bridges. It's an accepted practice here, I also have a powerpole on my boat, great invention up to about 7' of water which is usually not the case tarpon fishing. I'm amazed by how ridged some of you guys are in your way of thinking, maybe you can be on lakes and ponds but you have to be a little more open minded to alternatives sometimes.

Re: Anchor once, return several times

For what it's worth, we use an anchor with a small bouy on it for our jet ski sometimes. However, the rope is less than 25ft long, and we aren't normally more than 20ft from the shoreline anyhow, so there's little chance of any boat running over it. We normally use it on a shore where no one else is around so we can dump our gear (cooler, blankets, water toys, etc) and go play on the jet ski. Since we're normally in 4ft of water or less, most boats are going to have bigger problems than the anchor rode if they're cruising that close to the shoreline.

Ridged? On a lake or pond? I don't get it.

OP (Opie?) clarified that he only puts out 20' of line and its 20' from shore. In my navy, that would be a mooring line and not "the whole anchor line." or as the wizard of oz said, a horse of a different color.
Capt Sam does it like we do in the Chesapeake Bay and offshore, again different deal than off a recreational beach.

Problem solved.

Looks like a case where someone asks a question and doesn't like the answers. [QUOTE/] absolutely

I can't imagine a situation where someone would "reanchor 15 times a day."
[QUOTE/] been there done that many many times, still-fishing laketrout mostly. get an awful workout pulling in 150' of rope repeatedly!

Okay, I have taken several deep breaths and the red haze has cleared from my eyes. Different locales, different waters, different customs. Got it.

Suffice to say that if you do this in The Great South Bay of Long Island, you will be ticketed for intentionally creating a hazard to navigation.

If the authorities don't get you, you will be sunk. Most of our boats are equipped with deck guns and torpedo launchers...

I recently got a Minn Kota Terrova with iPilot. It has a "spot hold" feature that works great for what you are looking for. When you find a spot where you want to stop and fish, you simply hit the "spot hold" button and the motor takes over. Using gps, the motor keeps you within 5' of the spot. A virtual anchor. You can only store three of these anchor positions. This is only one feature of the iPilot system. Once you try it, you will wonder how you ever got along without it.

Re: Anchor once, return several times

So, after living for a week with my boat right off the house i'm at, that doesnt have a mooring.......I have got to say I have 150 feet of line off the bow and a 100 feet off the stern.

I threw the anchor on Monday and havent touched it yet.

Only difference is that people really don't "CUT" through here and I tied fenders to the line every 50 feet.
