Hi, I bought my boat about 1.5 years ago. The engine has run great the whole time. I know very little about engines, but I want to learn about them so that if it starts acting up, then I'll know what's going on. I'd also like to learn how to do maintanence. I haven't had a chance to order a service manual yet, so all I have is the manual that came with the engine (which tells you very little about it). So...I have attached some pictures of my outboard and I have labeled some parts of the engine that are unknown to me, and I'd just like to know what those parts are. This should be really easy for most of you. But...I have to start somewhere. If you have a moment, please look at the pictures and tell me what each numbered item is (1 through 9).

I think #8 is the ignition coil since there are 4 of them and they hook directly to the spark plugs. It looks like #5 is some relay that turns the starter on. Looks like #9 is some type of fuse or something. The rest of them, I have no clue.

Also, where is the power pack? Are there four power packs (one for each cylinder) or only one power pack total?

Go Gators.

I would highly reccomend getting yourself a manual to start, try ebay or outboardbooks.com to start. I will try to put names to the numbers as best as I can see for you. Other than that, how is the motor running? ANy problems? Have you changed the impeller, checked spark and compression yet?

Item numbers 1 and 6 are the power packs, 1 for each side, starboard and port. 2 is the choke solenoid. The top of 3 is the throttle advance screw and lock nut. 4 seems to be an electrical component bracket, maybe someone can help me on that one. 5 is the starter solenoid. Im not quite sure what 7 is pointing to. 8 are the coils, you should have 4 of them. And 9 seems to be the inline fuse holder, open it up and you should find a 20 amp fuse in it.

Ok, thanks a lot. Learned something new. I am going to order the Seloc manual when I am able to. I havne't had any problems with the engine yet. It's running great. I haven't changed the impeller. I will try to do that after I get the service manual because I don't know how to do it yet.

FYI, You will find the model specific OEM service manual much more helpful than either Seloc or Clymer for a particular motor.

The parts ID is much easier if you use the BRP parts catalog site and download the diagrams for your specific model:

Ahh, thanks, that helps too. It looks like #4 is the "rectifier and lead assembly."

Your best bet would be to get the OMC shop or service manual. Make sure you get the parts manual as it has detailed diagrams and parts explosions.

Ok, thanks. Tomorrow, I am going to lube up all of the moving parts (as it says to do in the manual) with the anti-corrosion lube/grease.

For most of the moving parts, it says to use the grease. However, for the starter pinion shaft it says to use Anderol 766, but it doesn't say what that is exactly. I have searched online and can't find it. What should I use to lubricate the starter pinion shaft? Thanks.

Lubricate the threads under the bendix with a light machine oil, or 3 in 1 oil. A light coat is all you need. Don't use wd40, don't use grease, don't lubricate the motor shaft, just the threads under the bendix.

This is where you want to lube it.
