gm280, will checkout the trolling video.....
I'm not a woodworker, so would have never came up with building a jig to get the angles right. Thought that was the key you would need to make a paddle.

Re: An OAR question

I have been inspected by the sheriff every year for 8 years and never asked to see a paddle or oar. It wouldn't do much on my boat even if I had one.

To pass the USCGA courtesy exam you have to have a paddle. One wouldn't work on my boat either but one is there nevertheless.

Public Vessel Safety Check Questions & Answers

Do I need a oar or paddle?

Question: I have heard that an oar/paddle is required safety equipment on power boats up to a certain length. I cannot find any reference to this requirement and am wondering if this is really a required item?

Answer: This was a requirement years ago, before 2000 and this is what I found:

"All boats less than 16 feet in length must carry a second method of propulsion. A paddle, oar, water ski, or other suitable device meets this requirement."

It is no longer a requirement for the award of our VSC Decal.

No mention here either:

OK, then the law changed in 2000. It was never a fed requirement, but rather a listed "option" that the CGA required for the sticker.

On a side note, having the sticker keeps the Sherriff from stoping you every year.

We are 4.5 hours from any saltwater and that would be in Seattle so no USCG here. I doubt that would stop the sheriff from stopping us around here anyway.

The Coast Guard isn't limited to salt water, plus the USCGA (the Coast Guard Auxiliary is a citizen patrol) is quite prolific. We are patrolled by sherrifs from 2 counties, the state police and 2 city police departments. At least where I am, unless you are doing something stoopid, or have babes wearing thongs on the bow (LOL), that sticker on the port side will give you a pass from getting boarded for a routine check every time.

We have been told by the sheriff that the only way out of an inspection is if you have been inspected within a year and have the report they give.

Same here. The sticker is dated. I've had patrol boats approach me, look at the sticker then turn away.

I carry 2 paddles. If we have motor issues I'm not going to be the only one paddling, the wife is going to help. I also carry a spare prop, cotter pins, shear pins, and prop nut.
