Has anybody even made an oar for their boats? And how does one buy the correct oar for their boat? I understand that law requires you to have an oar in your boat. But how do you know what size? And has anybody thought about making such with some really nice contrasting woods?

Paddles are not sized to the boat, they are sized to the paddler. :)

up to a specific size of boat, you need a paddle, here anyway.. A manual way of propelling/controlling the boat, in case your motor dies.. although I dont care how big a paddle you got, it wont do much good on a 25ft or bigger cruiser tho

Isn't an oar in a fixed position on a boat, while you can be up a certain Creek without a paddle??

Re: An OAR question

if you want to build a paddle look for some canoe/kayak sites. most have plans for basic paddles. I have some plans at home for a nice canoe paddle.

Re: An OAR question

bruceb58, its been a long time since I owned any boat (about ten to twenty years or more now), but back then if I remember correctly you had to have one on board. So I assumed you still did need one... However I was interested in if anybody actually made their own with some nice woods and quality glues. Seems a few contrasting wood colors and some epoxy with or without fiberglass would make for a real solid oar that looks amazing as well... :watermelon:

Re: An OAR question

Please clarify whether you mean oar or paddle. Given the context I think you mean paddle, but there is a big difference.

Re: An OAR question

Paddle size depends on the paddler and the craft size. I keep a plastic and aluminum canoe paddle on my boat just in case and have needed it once. It mainly stays in the ski locker so looks don't really matter. As to making your own, it can be done but it takes a lot of work and skill to make a good one. Google Jimistyx for some info on paddles. Jimi Snyder is regarded as one of the finest paddle makers in the country.
In terms of cost, my whitewater paddle cost $300 and the plastic/aluminum one was around $20.

GM280, looking forward for your build thread. :D
Really enjoyed the trailer. very nice
huts

hungupthespokes, thanks for the kind words. I really enjoyed building that trailer. I still have to have if inspected by the sheriff department yet to make sure it is road worthy, so after that, it is completely finished. I do have a thread on here about the 1976 Johnson 40HP outboard I completely rebuild as well, and a Motor Guide III trolling motor rebuild too. I have already started on the actual boat now and will post the pictures as I go along...

Also thanks for that video link. That IS what I was wondering if anybody actually made any paddles like that. I like wood working and have most any type wood working machine I could possible need, including a 2HP 17" Grizzle band saw to do the same type build he did in the video...

Re: An OAR question

I have been inspected by the sheriff every year for 8 years and never asked to see a paddle or oar. It wouldn't do much on my boat even if I had one.
