We have been in Irak for a few years now and things are not shaping up the way people hoped for.In fact things are changing on the ground in a frightening way.It started with removing Sadam, restarting the oil industry and bringing democracy to the middle east.Of those 3 goals only the first was achieved.Instead we find ourselves in a civil war between the Shi-ites and the Sunnies.Iran is emboldend by Hezbollahs succes and is trying to take the leading role in the arab world as the one country with the potential to destroy Israel. Most Sunni Islamic countries have hated the Shia religion for the past 1400 years.
In my opinion this is a great opportunity. We should stoke the fires of hatred between the Shi-ites and the Sunnis, get out of their way in Irak and let them fight it out between themselves.Whenever one sides appears to loose we should send them some weapons, just so it will be an even fight.
Their dependence on weapons will be the key to cheaper oil and we will export guns in return for oil. This will improve our economy ,get us out of Irak and allow us to win this war by having those guys kill each other by the tens of thousands. An inhumane thought? Oh come on,they like martyrdom!
If you think that this is just a cynical troll, think again and reread your history books.
Sometimes, guiding inevitable events in a favorable way,is the way wars are won.

You are overlooking Iran.

If we pull out Iran will take over. Forget democratic government in Iraq. Another bitterly anti U.S. and Israel Islamic Theocracy.. . probably more dangerous than Saddam and more radical than the Taliban.

Think we have to pay a lot for oil now?

It seems that we have been around this block a time or two, isn’t this what we did to get even for the Iranian take over of our embassy? I do believe that is when we started supplying Sadam with his weapons isn’t it?

It seems that we were doing that in Iran with the Shah, before Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, came into power and took 66 American hostages for 444 days.

I actually agree with rolmops and rodbolt on this one. The only problem would be keeping the weapons low tech that we sell them so they don't use them on us later on. I believe that we would have still been colony of England if France hadn't done similar intervention during our revolution.

I beg to disagree with you guys. The biggest danger for the arab world, right now is non-arabic Iran.If Iran gains the upperhand in Irak,we will witness a huge flow of manpower and materials from the sunni nations such as the Saudis, kuwaities, united emirates and the North African countries in order to prevent the Iranians from taking over Irak. Chances are that the same guys who currently fight like devils to get us out of Irak will turn on the Shi-ite Iranian invaders.None of them want some Shi-ite Ayatolla breathing down their necks. But what about the Syrians, you ask. They are not Sunni.Better than 40% is Christians and then there are Kurds,Druse and some sunni tribes. This whole mix is controlled by the Alawi sect which is a small minority group, originally sponsored by the French during the Mandate period.
There is absolutely no reason for the west to stand in between these 2 groups.Let them fight and fight and fight .It will drive the sunni camp into the Western sphere of influence, while isolating the Iranians. It will probably also promote cooperation between Israel and the arab states. Not out of friendship, but because of practical neccessity.
Remember, there is only one thing that Irakis hate more than each other and causes them to work together. And that is foreigners who try to impose their ideas upon them

Wishful thinking Rolmops, the USA is not in a position where we can afford the entire mid-east to explode, we are not the only country in the world with its national interest at stake in the region, we therefore could not control the types of new weaponary entering into the region, the introduction of more weaponary into that volatile area cannot be in the long term interest of Israel.

That was Saddam's big mistake, TXS.

He deliberately misled western intel to think he had 'em and was developing more. He thought we would be afraid to confront him.

Makes one wonder about Iran's nuclear capability, doesn't it?

Until islam regains control of it's ruling high priests (the mulahs), we officially have the nation of islam to fight.
They have two choices;
They can take to the streets enmass, and denounce terrorism and proclaim their desire to peacfully co-exist with the rest of humanity --
Or they'll have a large part of the globe's population actively trying to protect themselves from these monsters while they can continue to sheepishly follow their mullahs right into the firey pit..

An interesting theory, Rolmops, and it certainly does make some sense.

When you have the Shiites, who hold the majority in Iraq, demonstrating in the streets of Baghdad in favor of Hezbollah we clearly have a problem our military has no hope of fixing.

Iraq is already aligned with Iran now. As bad as Saddam was, he was a thorn in Iran's side and performed a valuable service for the west.

And the mideast is already in turmoil---that ship has sailed as far as keeping a lid on that.

JB
and ya gotta admit. western intel lied to us about their knowledge Saddam's program was all smoke and mirrors.
however saber rattling like saddam did has led to conflict before.
for some really interesting links google, "CIA taliban training".

shows how far back and how nasty we did that reagion in the name of "communism".

we have to go back and somehow fix all the sharp stick pokes we have done since the 50's or so.
if not nothing we do will aid the reagion. and if ya read the links you will see why the US did what it did. you can sum it up in 3 letters.
