This is one of those things that has an undeniable ring of logic to it.

Nope....
Waste of time & money....IMHO
I personally think all workplace drug testing is carp.....
Why are Conservatives / Rehubs are always up for government regulation when they think it might save 'em a buck.....
But if it might cost 'em a buck they begin to snivel?
Who will pay for all of these tests?.....JK
Your liberal Seattle friend :)

Drug testing makes sense. Neutering "career" welfare recipients should also be considered after they have brought 2,3,4,5 or more children into the world.

What if they are Christian though?

Isn't there a 'diminishing return' cap in place that lowers the money you get for each sucessive child?
There is such a thing as Birth Control Pills, you know who will not fund that or abortion....
But sterilization is OK? :$

I'd have no problem with that policy. I'm not a fan of drug testing either, but I'm even less of a fan of certain welfare recipients using their funds to get stoned and sit around all the time. I'm not of the opinion that all welfare recipients are druggies, but drugs squelch ambition. Welfare should be reserved for those that can't work, not for those that would rather not. Problem is that there is no one test for all drugs. They're all separate and none are cheap. And there are ways around many of them.

Interesting timing on this post. I just rode the elevator with two people who were heading to the social services office (musn't call it the welfare office.....might hurt somebody's feelings). They were so stoned they could barely talk. Bet they have no problem getting their assistance. Pisses me off big time. I'd be all for testing.

Fair questions...

Which drugs should be tested?

Should Alcohol be included?

Should Tobacco be included?

IMHO, the latter two are probably more of a social problem than pot, and more of a reason for certain people to be on welfare than pot. They call pot a gateway drug leading to abuse of worse drugs. Seems to me that alcohol and tobacco are just as guilty if not more so. From what I've seen, the vast majority of stoners are also alcoholics and/or cigarette smokers.

OK with me.

However, I would be OK with neutering illegal immigrant welfare recipients ;)

First you would have to make them illegal.... oops, tried that, worked about as well as the war on drugs. :p

Why would alcohol and tobacco have to be illegal? Its just logical that career welfare folk haven't earned those luxuries and don't have the means to support those habits. They can't even feed themselves or their family:love:

I'd also support testing for M&M's, ice cream, Lady Godiva chocolate, Coca-Cola, and a few other items not necessary for survival.

I had a friend once suggest that every other corner have 55 gallon drums full of rice and beans. The hungry can help themselves.

That would help!
Did anyone see where a French Court decided to phohibit certain soup kitchens (groups) from distributing free pork based soup?
Wanna guess why? :$

If I am guessing what you are suggesting that would be a good reason to allow it. ;)

Re: An interesting approach to issuing welfare!

While I believe that welfare recipients should not recieve welfare if they are abusing drugs and alcohol, I also agree that there are a lot of perfectly legal luxuries that welfare recipients partake in that wastes money. Just how does that get regulated? It isn't possible. Its just like ex-wives that use child support to make that new car payment, there is no easy way to prevent it. I think the best that can be done is time limits. I feel there should be a child limit, but God forbid we get in the way of the imperative to breed....You can take a horse to birth control, but you can't make it think...
