Re: Americas Cup

A bit boring out there yesterday with no wind so the support crew had a race in the RIB's - excerpt from the New Zealand Herald.

"The smooth surface of the gulf today did prove amenable to another form of watersport, and a chase boat race was organised to break the tedium.

Even though Team New Zealand are not involved in the yachting contest at this stage, one of their chase boats nevertheless entered the informal motor-powered competition, and went on to win narrowly from a Victory Challenge entrant, with an umpires' boat third.

- NZPA
nzherald"
Ross

Re: Americas Cup

Howdy, Ross.

I wonder if "the" cup should be called the "Kiwi Cup" for a while, at least.

One of my treasured family heirlooms is a handwritten, eyewitness account of the races for the "Queen's Cup" by my great grandfather, then LT D.L. Braine, USN, of the races in 1851 that won, for the yacht "America" the cup that was called for the next 150+ years, the "America's Cup".

It seems right, to me, that the cup bear the name of the winner.

Re: Americas Cup

JB, Peter Montgomery, one of our TV presenters and a knowledgable boat person, called the Americas Cup "New Zealands Cup", when we kept it last time and I think it hit a cord with a lot of Kiwis. I agree that it take on the countries name that wins it even though we all know it as the Americas Cup!

I've been down by the Viaduct Basin a lot over the last few days and have met and seen numerous of the crews and sailors, along with numerous support folk wearing various company colours.
Everybody has been courtious and well behaved. There's no hint of the pressure they must all feel at this stage of the racing. Crews have shown how well they can get along, as witnesed by one crew borrowing a boom from one of the relegated crews.
I have to admit that I've been temptedto donate a few smoked fish to the Prada team as they showed much enthusiasim towards the Kiwi tucker last time round. But alas I haven't enough to give away! Perhaps next week!

It sounds like a great paper to have in your possession JB, I would cherish it and I hope your heirs cherish it also.....
Ross

Re: Americas Cup

Hi, Sloopy.

They didn't wait until the US held the cup for 150 years to call it "America's Cup". They called it America's Cup as soon as the vessel, America, won it.

My suggestion was not that the cup bear the name of the country which the winner represented, but the name of the vessel. :)

Prada lost to OneWorld today after a tight fight whereby Prada showed considerable increase in down wind speed. The breaking of the spinnaker pole proved their undoing. Even when OneWorld broke their spinnaker chute they had enough time to recover and win.
The news says the race committee leader has requested that Prada be shown as 1-0 up. This request was announced before racing started.

Alinghi beat Oracle easily to win their race.
Great TV today even though their were breakages it goes to prove they are throwing everything at each other.
Alinghi's sister ship was seen in the background going through her exercises, as was Team NZ.
Ross

Well folk, they're at it again. Today Alinghi did what they will do each race to Oracle. Showed them a clean pair of heels! All the way to the gun!
Didn't Larry Ellison look a bit miffed sitting in as 17th man on Oracle?
I reckon it's down to Team NZ and Alinghi for the AC.
Ross

It's only one race in light shifty winds. Let's not count them out yet.
No question that Coutts and Butterworth are hard to beat, though.
