Call me a "girly man". I've NEVER had a trailer failure, of any sort.

I consider 750 pounds of tongue weight "significant". Can you hold that, spread over 2 square inches, in your hand?

Hey I'm a Friend of Arnold's.
We are here to pump you up!!

"Girly man", "girly man", "girly man"... :p

DJ yes 750 lbs of tongue is significant.
If I was trailering that kind of weight around
the country I would grease it too.

When we bought our 4 horse trailer 12,000 lbs. fully loaded (Ball Hitch) the manual stated that you should grease the ball occasionally and only lightly.

As others have stated it is mainly for protection of the metal parts from rust and wear and a little grease goes a long way, too much just makes a mess.

I grease once a month or so and use very little.

well it seems like some of us still follow what dad used to say..."you cant work the d@#! thing if it is rusty"... I use that white lithium spray once every 2 months...seems to work for me!

I never did until one day it occurred to me that if there's enough friction the trailer might grab the ball enough to unscrew it a little bit on a turn and it might not tighten it back up when I turrned back to the right. I shuddered to think what might happen if the ball got a little loose.

But I'm just paranoid - I bet that's never happened.

JT, It can happen. Happened to dad, infact the same car and the same ball. He drilled through nut and shank and put bolt in it.

Now all things don't require lube. Brothers got a 5th wheel. The trailer hitch rides on a plastic bushing (I guess its plastic), But directions say don't grease it.

Contrary to popular belief as usual, I'm a believer of greasing the hitch not the ball. The latch mechanism is the weakest link of the system.
