Am I the only one that puts grease on their trailer ball? I cover with a tennis ball that I split to avoid a mess, but I grease it up real good.

Nope I spray mine with silicone in the can. Just as slick and not as messy

I do the grease thing once n a while. Have to remind myself. Spend too much time on the boat. Have to force myself to focus on the trailer and such.

New balls are 5 bucks. Probably less than the grease you put on it.

Not in stainless Oz, or in the ball switchable that I have. Grease and a rubber ball cover.

If your ball/hitch squeaks, its metal rubbing metal...which will leave shiny metal...which will rust...which aint metal no more...which could cause your boat to pass you on the highway while still on the trailer (of course this is worst case scenario). It isn't quite so much the ball that will wear, it's the 1/8 thick trailer socket metal. But again, it could take years, but a shot of something is recommened.

I use grease and a rubber cover. Problem is people like my rubber cover so much they keep taking them. Wish they would just buy their own, just a dollar or two.

I also grease up the coupler mechanism so it slides on easily without binding, latches smooth and releases easily as the jack is raised.

Mark.

Re: Am I the only one?

That must be messy.
I can safely say over a 20 year period I put
more than 300,000 kms on the same ball and socket
trailering my boat around the Country.
And I am still using the same 2" ball although
I now have a new trailer. I know the fellow that
bought my old rig is still trailering it. There
was no reason for concern about the condition of
the socket when I sold it.And I never once put a
drop of grease on it.

I don't grease mine, and have never had a problem. I had even seen it recommended to not gease so as to maintain the ground connection for the lighting, but I didn't buy that one because the ground should be through the recepticle.

It seems to me that in the good old days you were supposed to grease the ball for the ground connection. Newer wire connections ground through the wires but the old ones didn't.

Re: Am I the only one?

It helped my ground connection plus the MAIN reason is once n a while the two pieces just stick like hell. A dab of grease keeps things functioning better. I have run mine dry alot and never had any mechanical malfunctions. Better with the lube once or twice here and there. No big deal.

Re: Am I the only one?

If I went to buy a boat, and the ball or hitch were rusty, would that make me think that the REST of the needed items were taken care of? Think about it.

I do the same. Just something about metal to metal that I don't like.

I always grease prior to trailering, I also use a rubber cover and store my receiver in the garage so I don't bang up my knees like that guy on TV. ;)
