Hello,
I have bought a evinrude 4hp two-stroke.
The manual is ordered, and is due next week.
Yesterday I checked to see if the cooling is working. There is a good amount of water coning from the exhoust holes, so the impeller is working. I guess I had the engine run for maybe two minutes in a tub. after that i could still touch the metal at the sparkplugs, but it was well warm.

My question:
Can the engine reach what I would guess to be operating temperature in this short time, when running in a tub? (I did feel right at the plugs)
Thanks in advance,
Bradford

Re: Am I overlooking annything?

Hi,

If it were me, I would change the impeller anyway. You don't say the year of the motor, but I guess that it is used. Unless you know the impeller has been changed within the last couple years, it's probably due, even if it's pumping water now. I thought the 15 hp that I bought was pumping OK, but when I changed the impeller (which didn't look bad), the flow about doubled... The 25 hp I bought pumped water fine, but when I changed the impeller, I found one vane was broken off and was just riding around inside the water pump housing. The ones that weren't broken looked worn enough that it probably had never been changed.

I don't know if running 2 minutes without load would be enough to get it to full normal temperature.

I'd also change the lower unit oil for sure. If your motor uses a shear pin (drive pin), you should pick up a couple spares and keep them with you.... I'd put new spark plugs in and keep the old ones as spares (in the boat).

I'd probably leave it at that and then see how it runs on a boat. Poor idle or missing would get me looking at the carb or ignition (but I'd wait to see if there's a problem first).

As a tip, it helps to put the year and HP in the subject line, with a short description of your Q... you'll get more people reading it.

For example;

"new to me (year?) 4 hp, check impeller and what else?"

Good luck.

Brent

Thanks for the reply, And aswell the tip on the subject line. I will pay atention to that.

The year is 1979. The owner befor told me it was kept well, but as I don't know him I wanted to check some points.

I wil take the engine out on the boat for a short run this weekend, and keep a close look on it. When I get the service-manual I will change the impeller and oil.

Bradford
