Am I gonna sink my boat?

Might be a stupid q, but...

I just got a new power steering cooler unit, as mine was apparently leaking. It's a 1984 Mercruiser 488 (170), and I know it uses raw water for the cooling side on the cooler. I keep the boat in the water. If I remove the old unit, will I get water pouring in, and sink? I have a davit I can hook to the boat, but it isn't very convenient. If I don't need to secure it to the davit, I'd rather not.

You ain't gonna pull that much water in the time it takes to change it.Get a rag and stuff it in the hose.J

if you can route the end of the hose ABOVE the water line, you will not take on water

just be sure you can secure it in that position if you have to step out of the boat

otherwise, yeah, you could probably stuff a rag in it

Y should not get more than a cup or two of water in the boat. The cooler is above the water line, if it leaks a bit just raise the end of the hose while your changing the cooler.

sure - the tr/trs drives don't have pickups and need a scupper on the hull for cooling water, they have seacocks

as far as an alpha/bravo, it would take some engineering but yeah, it could be done

some bravo engine packages have dual seawater inlets - one through the drive and another through the hull

Ok, thanks. Looks like I'll be securing myself to the davits. It'll give me a chance to really see if they can lift the boat.

You really don't need one. invariably, someone would forget to open it, destroy the raw water pump and cook the exhaust components......
