Im just got a 15' something with no engine or controls. A guy is selling me a 1987 35hp Force with controls for $600. He says the motor is in very good shape and he's selling because he's upgrading to a 40 hp with tilt & trim. This is the first time I've ever dealt with anything about boats so I'm very unsure of dropping the money for it without knowing what to look for. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks!!

You might want to check ebay to get an idea of what it's worth. Also, there is a blue book for motors but I don't remember the name of it. One of the experts in this forum should be able to help. To be honest, that price sounds kind of high.

hello
sounds like the motor is priced right. you may have to play with prop sizes. a 15 ft boat is a lot of boat for a 35 unless its a small flat bottom rig.
I am always leery of the guy thats upgrading. used outboards make me nervous. I get at least 10 a year that I have to tell the customer that the motor that they just bought as a "rebuilt" from the trading post is blown. good luck and keep posting

If you get it, Get a Manual for your motor and follow the maintenence schedule to the tee. These motors need TLC in a big way. Decarb it at least twice a year. Before you buy any motor, do a compression test on it and check the lower unit lube to be sure there has been no water intrusion or particles that come out when you drain it. Have a shop check it out, if you are unfamiliar with the process. Well worth the money in the long run!! If he won't agree to let you do this, pass...

What Rick says here, is VERY important....If the seller doesn't want, or allow you to do this before purchase, assume the worst and run.....
