Alternator questions

I have dual mercruiser 260's on my new to me boat. Do both engines normally have an alternator on them.
I think one is bad just wondering if 1 alternator is enough to charge the batteries. Never had dual engines before so this is all new to me.

Ayuh,...... Only 1 should be charging the batteries,....

ok so what would the other one do.
the port motor is a newer engine. the starboard side is original.

On 2 or more engines in a boat ? It is common for only 1 engine to have a alternator AND a Power Steering Pump. They run just fine that way.

Guess I'm going to be scratching my head some, but every twin engine boat I've seen has 2 Alt's. Each motor charges it's own Bat, and one of them charges the house Bat

the engine that has the bad alternator has the power steering pump.
I guess in the spring I will have to chase wires on both engines and se which engine is doing what.

The standard configuration is one system for each motor
each motor has its own gauges .Charging systems are NEVER combined between motors.The only thing connected to both motors should be a Neg battery cable ,engine to engine
