Alternator Question

I just installed a factory alternator coil and regulator on a 1993 Nissan 8hp for charging the battery. Does this now mean that a battery MUST be connected while the motor runs as is the case with a car alternator? Can I just start it up hooked to a volt meter to check operation?

Re: Alternator Question

Yes you must have a battery connected or risk letting the magical smoke out of your shiny new alternator.

Also most alternators won't put out any voltage unless they sense the electrical field of the battery. So testing would likely be impossible.

Re: Alternator Question

I contacted Nissan directly. They replied that I can run the motor as long as the output leads don't touch. Since the alternator coil is under the flywheel which has strong permanent magnets, excitation from the battery is not needed. I ran the motor and recieved unregulated DC up as high as 20VDC. Hopefully with a battery connected this will calm down, if not I may add a voltage regulator. I am familiar with the old mechanical voltage regulators found on VW bug's (I have a Manx type Dune Buggy) and I believe this would be a viable option if voltage regulation is needed.
