Hi everyone,

I'm replacing the alternator on my 1981 Mercruiser 260 (GM 350, 5.7 liter). The alternator I removed is a Motorola model number 8RG2018, 12 Volt. From what I have found the alternators for this application run between 65 and 72 amps.

Can I (or is it ok to) replace this alternator with a truck/car alternator that is running the same volts and amps?

Is there any solid reason to upgrade to a higher amp model? If so where is the fuse for the alternator located?

Any help or ideas are thanked in advance.

Nick

P.S.

The numbers for the marine alternators I'm looking at are:
Sierra Remanufactured Alternator 18-5951
Arco Remanufactured Alternator 20104
Sierra New Alternator 18-5957
Arco New Alternator 40147

Ayuh,...... Absolutely NOT,......
Automotive Alternators have No Spark Suppression,+ could cause an Explosion in a Boat......

Is there any solid reason to upgrade to a higher amp model?

Not Really....

If so where is the fuse for the alternator located?

There Isn't 1,... It's hard wired to the starter.....
