Hello,
This is my 2nd question ever on my new (used) boat. It's a 1996 Godfrey Hurricane Sundeck 24" with a 5.7L Volvo Penta dual prop out drive. I SWEAR I saw that it was a SX-C but isn't that a single prop unit?
Anyway to my alternator problem. I was out the other day on a fairly new battery and everything has been fine. I usually show a charge of 14 amps but I didn't put a lot of stock in the validity of the gauge because I have some wiring problems to sort out still. I saw my volt gauge show almost a 16 amp charge yesterday. I just happened to have my volt meter on board and I opened the hatch and tested the alternator right off the leads. I DID in fact have 16 volts coming off the alterantor. I assume I'll cook off the battery soon if I don't get the alternator's voltage regulator fixed. Is that built into the alternator itself? Here is a picture of it:

2nd question: I'm having a start problem. It's not the wiring in this case, it's the plunger and contacts on the starter. I have a local place that I can get new contacts from if/when I pull the starter out. It's on the back left of the engine and IMPOSSIBLE to get to. I mean I can probably get to it if I take the engine hatch off, and use a mirror to blindly find the bolts that hold it in, but I assume it's going to be a 4 hour job instead of a 30 minute one. Does anyone have any tricks to getting a starter off an engine like I described above?
Also how do I find my EXACT engine model? There is NO sticker on it anywhere except a little thing that says displacement 5.7 liter.
