Alternator Conversion

I fried the alternator on my 1997 Wellcraft 20' with a Mercruiser 5.7L. After checking prices for a replacement, I was wandering if a Chevy alternator would be a direct replacement? If so, what do I ask for at my local auto parts store?

I'm a newbie so any advice is appreciated.

Re: Alternator Conversion

Only use MARINE rated alternators. They are screened to protect against sparks igniting any fuel vapors that may be in the bilge.
Some automotive parts are ok on an marine engine, but starters, alternators, distributors, carbs, fuel pumps, and automotive fuel injection systems are illeagle and dangerous.

Welcome to iboats......:)
An alternative would be to take it to your local starter rebuild shop.....:)

Like Haut said, cheaper to have it rebuilt; outer case is only difference.
