I have a 1986 Mercruiser inline 4 cylinder. I need to replace the belt on. I know i have to pull the engine mount off but do i need a engine hoist to hold up the engine? It appears that there is no way of replacing the belt without pulling the whole mount. Any advise would help.

Thanks

Re: alternator belt

On the ones I've changed there is a section of the mount that unbolts allowing belt replacement without lifting the engine.

Perhaps you should read the sticky at the top of this forum before you stick your foot in your mouth the next time.
You NEVER mentioned what Manufacturers engine you have.

Here is the thread you need to read.

Ignoring the rudeness..

Limited-Time is right. There is a rectangular section held on by two bolts that pops off on the port side of the engine somehwere around the alternator, giving you access to the belts. You don't need to pull the engine or move the hoist. I'd be more specific but I can't remember exactly..

People are here to try and help you, if you want to be rude to them you are not welcome.

Follow the advice you've been given, but cut the attitude. The people here just want to help. They're not in it to get bashed. I would suggest that you pick up 2 alternator belts. Install both around the engine mount, tying the second one out of the way. That way, when you need the next replacement, or if the first one breaks while on the water, it's an easy job to slip the replacement on. Saves trouble and worry. Safe, and calm, boating. Hy

Re: alternator belt

the belt should be easy to change guy, just get a manual and start reading like i just did, u will learn a lot, there is so much rudeness in this forum it never use to be like this, anyway this is a great place to get your boat fix if u can do the work yourself.,

tip tip what i found out sometimes you can just do a search on the problem you r having and it will bring up lots of simular problem like the one you have good luck.

Re: alternator belt

Ok heres how I do it. Will take 2 people my method and about 15 minutes.

You need to loosen the bolts on the mount starboard side.

Have someone with a crow bar or metal pipe about 3-4 feet long lever up the port side of the motor while you remove the port side bolts on the mount.

There is on my boat a plate perfect for leverage as least on my boat. I'm sure if you look carefully you'll find a spot not the oil pan.

If you do use the oil pan use the corner with a flat piece of wood between the pan and the pipe.

Slip on 2 belts. Why 2 belts you might ask.

Just in case one breaks while your on the water easy to replace 5 minutes tops. All you need would be a piece of pipe for leverage on the alternator and a 1/2 wrench.

Use a plastik tie to keep the spare belt around the bottom of the mount out of the way, I used 2 plastik ties.

There now ya done have fun on the water.

Re: alternator belt

You shouldn't need to use any type of leverage anywhere for changing the belt. As it has been stated, remove the 2 bolts on the port side of the engine mount that hold the rectangular block in place.. This will allow you to remove the block, slide a belt in and will only take 1 person. With a socket wrench it should take you about 5 minutes..

Re: alternator belt

I tried it without leverage. Was not enough room to slip in the belt. However if he can do it without leverage better still.

Re: alternator belt

Oh I forgot, see what happens when ya a old fart like me. 2 different size bolts on the mount, same side. 1/2 inch wrench for the alternator itself will all you will need for changing on the water if you slip 2 belts on.
