OK guys, I have replaced the shift cable bellows and am trying to install the shift cable sheath. What is the trick to push the end of the sheath through the little hole on the end of the bellows? I have greased the end, but just can not get it to slip into the hole. I am afraid of mangling the bellows in the process.

I did mine a few months ago and ran into the same problem. I sprayed wd-40 on it and then used a real small screw driver that had a blunt end on it to push it on little by little while rotating the screw driver around the bellow. I spent about 30 minutes doing it that way but it was better than the hour I spent before that, not getting any where with it.Just be very careful not to poke hole in it.
I'm sure there are alot better and safer ways of doing it from other members, but that is how I got mine.

I use a bit of grease It is very tight but slides fine after you get the brass end through it :)

Thank you for the responses. I ended up screwing a 1" length of wood pencil into the barrel end, then wrapping it with tape to create a tapered end with no shoulders. I then greased it up with 2.4.C., and was able to get it through.

Now, I need to figure out how to route it behind the engine, when I can not see where it comes through the transom. How did you do that?

Dons had made a picture before, its path depends on the engine model BUT it has to be correct so it will not bind when turning the boat

You really need to look at the path in a service manual so you do not have problems

Wow, great bulletin, Don S. Thank you.

During installation, how does one physically deflect the cable sheath from where it comes through the transom shield to go past the back of the engine? Do you use a long screw driver from the inside while another person pushes the sheath from behind the boat.?

Well,.......

1st You Pull the Outdrive,...
So you can Pull the Engine,....
Then you can Reach Right In There........d:)

Kiddin of course,......

It depends entirely on the amount of Access you have,+ the Tools you have available,.........
In Other Words,.......

WhatEver it Takes............................

That's what I thought. I just wanted to make sure I was not missing some obvious simpler way (besides taking it to the shop), and wanting to take heed of DonS's admonition to take the time to do it right......

The end guide for the cable has a small hole between the cable anchor and the end hole. Should the cable be pushed through the anchor until it bottom out and can be seen in this hole? This is for the new style pre-cut cable kit.

YES, all the way thru.
