alpha one shift problem

1983 fourwinns 190 470 mercruiser alpha one. Ok so yesterday I take the wife and kids outs boat ran great . Got to the dock shut it off. When started back up I had no forward gear with no warning sign grinding oir issues of any kind. It just wasn't there when I put the shifter in forward it just revved up when I put in neutral it was fine and revers eworked fine but no forward. Please help ! Was plannin on takin it out later tHis week for the holiday weekend . Any help will be greatly appreciated

Boat in the driveway. Drive all the way up. Wife in the boat. You outside locating the "shift cable" on the starboard side. Look up & under while the wife moves the control lever. Ideally you will have the throttle cable disconnected.
You are watching for the sheathing moving towards reverse & it moving away looking for forward!

Here's a pic of the shift shaft on the drive. When it is postioned straight front to back it should be in forward. That would be confirmed by trying to rotate the prop by hand (engine off) CCW and see if it locks. (standing at the back of the boat looking at the bow)
