Hello, I've got a 1986 alpha one lower unit problem. The lower unit housing got cracked and lost oil, sat for a cpl years and is locked up. I purchased a used lower unit with a good housing. But the one I purchased has a stripped drive shaft. Not propeller shaft. I want to switch drive shafts.
Is there any "how to" videos? I haven't found any yet. Need help please
The original lower unit was fairly new, about 3 seasons. Had health issues that put boating on the back burner for awhile. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

a involved process.and you need a manual
need a puller to remove the carrier. special thin wrench or the tool to hold the pinion gear nut, special tool or a busted crank form a mercury outboard or a blown upper gearset to hold the driveshaft to loosen and tighten the pinion nut, special tool to remove the driveshaft locknut, and

then lift out the driveshaft

When assembling these lower units, the drive-shaft is virtually the first thing put in, so on disassembly, it's the last out. You'll spend more on the special tools required than a new SEI lower. Some of the tools can be made, most can't. And if you haven't done one before, now is not the time to be learning.

JMHO (and years of experience ;))

First off I'm new to this site and I really appreciate the quick and informative responses. Hopefully I"m following protocol. Although I do have a manual and I'm not afraid of learning, this doesn't sound like this is a job that I want to do. Again, Thank you for the answers. K. Short
