reinstalled outdrive and testing for proper function. locks into fwd fine and spins freely in neutral. problem is when we go into reverse the prop wants to click as it spins and resists getting locked into gear in that if i spin the prop slowly it will lock into reverse and stay secure, but if i just spin it quickly it keeps clicking in reverse without locking in. is that normal for a boat out of water? thanks

May just need some cable adjustment. What was done while the drive was off? You did have everything in forward for removal and re-install didn't you?

thanks don. yes, we pulled the outdrive for summer service. placed in forward gear, removed nuts, trim and pulled drive. lubed it up, added new water passage oring and outdrive gasket, ensured the shift linkage lined up and put it back together. i raised the drive and can see the linkage is still connected. when we shift into fwd, the prop locks right in counterclock wise and wont spin, spins freely clockwise. neural spins freely both ways. reverse clicks constantly and wont fully engage unless i spin very slowly which it will then lock hard. does it have to do with the boat being on the trailer and not having pressure of the water?

we put it on muffs and ran it for a second. ran as expected in forward but clicked repeatedly in reverse. almost as if its just not getting all the way n gear but only in reverse

the linkage coming up from the lower gear unit that meets with the linkage n the transom assmebly is not going completely perpendicular when shifting into reverse. is that a cable length issue?

You need to re-adjust the shift cables per the book. Sounds like you was just barely working before you pulled the drive. It happens.

Here are the procedures from the manual. Follow all of them, you don't know at this point which one is out.
