I recently purchased a alpha one 1st gen for my 87 mercruiser 3.0, The guy i bought it from removed it before i got there. Tried to put it on today and he did not put in forward gear be for removing it. Is there any way i can get it in gear with out it being on a boat? Also when i removed my old out drive there was oil in the space between my out drive and my motor, not sure what that space is called. What would cause this so i can be sure to check the stuff on the new one before installing??:confused::confused:

yep, spin the prop ccw while turning the shift shaft to face fwd.

this is a pic of the shift shaft in the bell housing and the shift shaft in the upper, coupled and in neu. when the drive is on the bench, you only have the male side of the coupler, the shift shaft that's in the upper. face this coupler fwd. not like in the pic. the pic is in neutral.
ya might wanna check to be sure the shift shafts are not bent too if they were not removed in the fwd. facing position. to get the female part of the coupler to face for and aft. put the remote at the helm in fwd.

don't know that it has a name. i think your referring to inside the bellows. the bellows go around the drive shaft and is the seal between the gimble housing and the drive. the oil (gear lub) gets in there because of a failed ft. seal of the out drive. (the ft. seal keeps lub in, but don't keep water out since there's not supposed to be water in that area). usually due to water intrusion into the bellows area where no water should be present. you need to check to see if there is a leak some where. the bellows them selves are suspect. the shift shaft bellows are suspect. the shift shaft seal in the bell housing is suspect.
to see if the drive is sound you need to do a pressure test... http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=288430 look at #8. look at them all, lots of great info in the adults only thread..

fwiw, there's no alhpa1 gen 1 since there was only the alhpa1 drive. there was no confusion untill alpha1 genII came to be. so there's alpha1 drives and alpha1 genII drives.

If there was oil there yes the front seal on the drive is leaking. If there was a water ingress problem in the boot area Id have to say that the oil would be a watery, milky, mess. If its straight oil I dont think you have a water leaking into boot problem. You are replacing the drive with another one so that will hopefully look after the oil seal problem.Do a pressure test on the new to you drive.Visually inspect the large boot for holes, wont likely find anything. Then you could either change all the boots(rotton job) on the off chance that there is a leak, or put new drive on, run for a few hours, remove drive again and observe boot for water or oil.Me Id do the latter.
