Re: Alpha Gimble Grease point missing??!!

see that dot of epoxy on the pic showing the stbd side. thats where the grease fitting was supposed to be. I think someone broke it off or stripped it and filled the hole with epoxy. pop that bearing out with a slide hammer and look for a hole in the bearing housing at about the 1 or 2Oclock position. it also looks like you have had water in the gimbal area. it only comes from limited locations and is most likly the cause of the bearing failure. never saw one wear out but I see water damaged ones weekly. if its water damage its IMPERATIVE to disasemble the ujoints for inspection. usually when the joint fails it takes the transom shield with it by breaking the aluminium ring the gimbal bellows clmp to.

second what rodbolt says about the ujoints. replaced my gimbal bearing due to water in the bellows one year and the next year, replaced ujoints. could have done it all at one time. the joints make noise and start vibrating. they feel ok when you take the drive off, but they aren't. the hardened surfaces under the caps will ripple.

The what I thought was an epoxy dot was my thoughts too, but it is not actually epoxy there, it is where I rubbed it back a bit thinking along the same lines and it looked like there something under paint. It was not..
Anyway, it is down at service now and will see how it all comes together and it is very likely I will replace Ujoints too.

Thanks to all that have replied and assisted and will let you all know how it comes together in the end.

Hi All,
The update to all that have offered advise.
The Gimble was one big headache to get out  , ended up being able to break apart the actual bearing and then cut and collapse the outer ring. It was all so corroded in there that no amount of anything would shift it easily. Anyway, end result it was out. New bearing fitted and lined up fairly easily.. :)
Had a few trying moments getting the drive back on but got there in the end. Started boat and runs very nice and a lot quieter now ;)
Checked it all out once apart and there is definitely no grease point on this one, so must be the old style..
I have another issue now but will start a seperate string on that one.

Thanks to all that offered information.
