I just removed the entire outdrive today and after separating the upper and lower unit I can't get the upper unit to rotate by hand, is this normal?

Also when I mess with the shift mechanism on the lower unit sometimes it locks, sometimes it doesn't. I'm thinking the lower unit is trashed.

you should be able to turn the splined shaft of the upper fairly easily when the halves are separated

if you pull the top cap of the upper it will allow you to see the upper gearset

as far as the lower, if the upper is trashed and with that crack in the lower, i would say that the entire drive is FUBAR
