Alpha 1 Stern Drive compatibility

I currently have a 1983 Mercruiser V8 228 engine (needs to be rebuilt or replaced).

The stern drive is a rebuilt Alpha 1 Stern drive (rebuilt in Oct 2010).

What engine could I swap with which would be compatible to the drive?

Your 228 comes up as a 305 cu in GM block. I'd drop in a small block 350 from the same vintage (2-piece rear main seal)- all of your accessories will bolt right up to it.

Ayuh,... The Easiest swaps will be Any SBChevy, from 1979 to 1986...

Later SBCs can be used, with adaptations....
