I'm replacing the water pump in an 1988
Alpha 1 gen 1 serial number 0c501178.
When I go to the parts look up it gives me several kits. I believe the kit I need is 18-3319 ( I would go OEM but they dont list a kit with the base.. ) When I look at the Sierra catalog it list part number 18-3320 which I believe is the same as 18-3319 except the top washer is built-in to the top housing. Can anyone confirm this ...

Thanks Mark

Mercury doesn't sell MC-1/R/MR/Alpha one water pump kits with a base because the housing can mount to two different bases. Bases are sold separately depending on gearcase vintage/style

Can't say as to the sierra numbers, I've never used them as they don't even come close to the quality as oem. Would highly recommend oem

As for mercury parts you need:

46-96148Q 8 - Water pump repair kit

46-44292A 3 - Water pump base kit (based on info posted)

Would also recommend the oem parts as well. It’s been a few years, but last time I ran a Sierra impeller while it worked fine. When I changed it out, it seem to have a lot more wear on it than an OEM impeller of similar age. This is completely anecdotal, but it was my feeling that the sierra impeller would last about half as long as the OEM Merc….
ever since then I have bought OEM impellers just changed mine last year after six years and it was in perfect condition

I normally go oem as well but the owner of the boat didn't want to spring for the extra $45 for the base and he didn't have any info on previous service so I kind of insisted on replacing the whole pump assembly

This post reads to me as you are a mechanic for hire.

If so, asking about sourcing/selecting the correct parts for this routine maintenance job on this forum is interesting. Good luck

If it's your neighbor let him get whatever parts they want

If it's a customer, your asking this forum as to sourcing/selecting the correct parts for this routine maintenance job is interesting
