Lake Champlain is well past its flood level right now, which has pretty much shut down half the marinas. The marina I keep my boat at has a couple feet of water in the parkinglot.
Yesterday I needed to unload some extra lumber from the boat, and bring it back to my friends house where Im still wintering. When the 10ft 2x4's went TO the boat, i just drove down into the lot as there was only one small sailboat blocking me in drydock.
Now, to keep my feet dry, I have to zigzag between 6-7 boats and skirt the edge of the lot. Not something I saw myself doing with 10ft boards, and after wading thru part of the lot the other day, I figured it wouldnt be too bad to just drive across in the water.
Well, about 2/3 of the way across, I passed over the area that the storm drain occupies. Otherwise known as the lowest point in the lot. I could feel the water churning under the cab, and the bumper was pushing up a pretty good wave. Annnd my tires started to slip.
Oops!
I gave it a little more gas to keep up momentum, and clawed past that spot to an area with only a couple inches where I could stop and load up.
Getting out was just as stressful, even thought I locked the truck in 4, because I'd normally do a 3 point turn and drive up the hill and out, but to do that I'd have to back into the deep, stop, take the truck from reverse to drive, and then hit the gas again.
Letting off the gas in deep water is NOT a good idea. I ended up backing down the line of boats, and up the driveway, and then backing onto the somewhat busy road.
Added a bit of excitement to my afternoon, and the truck got a good belly washing, but I don't think I'll try that again...
