hey guys i have a 94 30hp johnson outboard and i was doing some tuning and cleaning under the hood and notice that the carb intake was in plain site and there are 3 bolt holes on the front of the carb where it looks like there would be a air filter or somthing, just wondering if its fine running without it or should i install one.

Sometimes there is an air siliencer mounted to the front of the carb. Older versions of your engine had them, I am assuming you have a 2 cylinder 30hp. I have never seen an air filter on any marine engine, Flame arresters yes, but never a filter. Probably too much of a fire risk.

Why would you need an air filter? Not much in the way of airborne dust out over the water...

When that mtr was built the bean counters at OMC decided the air silencer wasn't needed.
