That '470' is just a sticker, and yes the valve covers for the 470 and the 485 are completely interchangeable, it's the same cover.

If it's dumped that much oil out through the bellows and into the bilge, then it's either popped the front seal, or the surface on the yoke is so bad it's completely eaten the seal. Get ready for either a speedie-sleeve, or a new yoke.

I'm wondering if I should hunt down a new drive then, and if I'm going to go that far, I guess I should figure out if the boat is worth putting a new drive on.

Picture of my bilge after being stored for a week with the drive trimmed up to trailer height

Had a quick question for anyone still getting notifications on this thread. Is the bearing race #11 supposed to be pressed in

Just realized I forgot to post a picture of what I was talking about. But I'm assuming you figured it out Chris. That's interesting as I'm rebuilding this, mine had just just fallen out when I went to punch the seals out.

not sure I would dump money into a boat with a Platypus motor (my nickname for the 470). Muc is right, you should really check the boat for rot prior to going any further

thank you everyone that contributed to this last summer. after dealing with pandemic stuff, i'm finally going to start making progress on this again.

Scott,
so you dont think it's worth buying an outer to put on it ? What other options would you recommend to either a) move on from this b) get it going to at least get SOME entertainment out of this.

I liked my 470. If the engine and especially the floor is in OK shape, the outdrive is not a big deal. Have you pulled the drive and pressure tested yet? Agreed not sure how that much lube is getting into your bilge.

Serial number location. http://forums.iboats.com/forum/engi...rn-drive-and-engine-serial-numbers#post645586

Once you have the water pump base off, look down the hole. If you see just the top of a tapered roller bearing, it's MC1 or R. If you see a locking collar (above the bearing) with 4 tabs facing in, then it's an MR or Alpha One... (MR and Alpha One are the same in all but name)..

Chris.......

Locking collar...

I know this is way old and I apologize for reviving an old thread... but I figure I would conclude this for future use. Boat got brought home from father in laws house this year.... we moved pretty far away and I stopped working on it, and never had a use for it.... but now I live on a lake and I'm kicking this back into high gear.

I did in fact remove the broken off piece of the water pump to discover this specific locking collar and have concluded that I did have an alpha 1 gen 1.

Upon further inspection, because of this incident, the bearing I mentioned earlier had over heated, and the race began spinning in the cylinder and caused many gouges making the drive housing unrepairable.

I have found a new donor housing and am rebuilding this over the coming weeks to hopefully have my boat on the lake sometime this season.
