Re: Advice Wanted

I use a 4 way puller looks like a peace sign with the tail. I tighten it snug then some and tap the top of the puller blot with a 16 onze framing hammer to shock it and it usually pops lose risking the thread damage that could occur. I,ve done this 5 times with no propblems to this point. The protector with the manual type gaurds the carnkshaft threads when the flywheel pops lose.

Re: Advice Wanted

It kinda of annoys me when people have a thread going and somewhere down the line it gets resolved and they never come back and put the "bow" on it. So in order to live up to my own high standards. Here is the bow to this thread.

I finally got the block back from the machine shop. Here are the three holes with nice shiny helicoils installed. I must say that I somewhat recommend this to anyone who has stripped off bolts in their block because 1) you get the satisfaction of knowing that it was done right. 2) You get to learn more about your motor and how it all works if you didn't already, and 3) you get to do some maintenance that wont otherwise get done. Specifically replacing the lower seals.

I have been having a hell of a time trying to get the baffle and covers to seal. I had to PB weld a section of the rib where the exhast is as it was letting water into the exhaust. After letting the PB weld dry I took a peice of oak and glues sandpaper on to it (Two sections) and then sanded the entire surface flat. Nice clean surface. well that solved my baffle problem now I also sanded the outer cover and now water is dripping out the screw holes. I didn,t use sealer just the gaskets. I belive I have to sand the little inner ridge where the two smaller bolts go through to compensate for the meat taken off the cover or use a double outter main gasket. I can say that the engine idles without missing now and holds a steady speed when increased throttle. No more water in the motor. and i think it should be fine when I,m finnished with the cover.

Ouch. I hope that works for you. I went ahead and purchased a new baffle plate as well as a new outer cover. Hopefully wont have to go through what your going through.

Re: Advice Wanted

I actually bought a set baffle and cover from a fresh water engine. I took the cover off and it has a crack so I PB welded it and sealed it. I,m going to let it sit a few days before trying it out. I may get a new cover in the spring depending. as long as after all the money i spent on carbs pistons, rings, crankshaft etc etc is not a waste then I wouldn,t mind getting a brand new cover. I was really relieved today to here it run without missing. Thats the most important thing. I don,t know why the ears on the cover bow like they do. I have to say the design for the 60 65 70 HP covers is terrible.

Re: Advice Wanted

i finally got everything put back together and started it up this afternoon. It ran fairly well. However, I noticed some water leaks around the exhaust cover. Do I need to re-torque them or take them off and re-do it?

Re: Advice Wanted

There should be no leaks if you used new gaskets and torqued them properly.

UGH, this reminds me of my mercury D: I too broke 3 out of the some 13 bolts when i took the exhaust manifold off. NOT FUN. Had a machinists weld a nipple and nut on them.

Just re-torque them like you would a tire.

mercurymang-After running across this post and reading through my hope was that you would not to continue to waste your time and possibly damage your block, once those snap off your chances of getting it out without drilling are slim to none .
I have been in that situation enough and would advise anyone going through that to do what you did to avoid cracking your block like I did.
additionally if you have a steady hand or drill press you could possibally drill it out yourself and use the heli coil, I swear by them and they are quite simple to use, for me I have invested in a drill press and don't stress on it anymore.
good job!

Re: Advice Wanted

Oh, BTW!
use caution in the re-torque process you could possibly strip threads on some of the other holes, I wouldn't advise to go over factory specs much.
there are other methods to help to seal(Double gasket for one or ultra black silicone, very little in fact).
Good luck.

Re: Advice Wanted

Depending on where the water is leaking may help. There are a few reasons for it leaking(I know I went through 4 sets of gaskets before getting it to seal and 2 sets of covers). If you used sealer it has a tendancy to make the gasket spead and split when tourquing it down or re tourquing it . The mating surfaces where the bolts and the heli coils are is thin. the holes of the gasket can get out of round and leak. A hairline crack in either the baffle plate or the exhaust cover will let water into the bolt hole and or heli coil area and make it leak. Not cleaning out the threaded area or using sealer instead of loctite on the bolts can spread the threaded area and split the case where the bolts screw in on the block. Uneven surface can not only make for a bad seal but also can cause the covers to crack. I had to file and then sand the block surface with a Hawk ( For mudding on sheetrock Aluminum Trowel 14 X 14 square). with sand paper glued to it to get my surface flush again. I had severe water damage and some overheating apperent when got the engine. Sight unseen. Im still reassembling it again. Had to replace 2 rods and the trigger as I was having issues with firing when throttling up. I also had some ticking after warmup and a slight run. I just got some PERFECT SEAL (works on bolts as well as machined surfaces and gaskets), and you may be able to remove one bolt at a time and add this stuff and it may seal) and it seems to be good stuff. If i ever have to take the cover off again I will be using that. I used permatex brush on sealer and have it sealed but there is some of the gasket that seems to be off a bit but still holding the seal. I would not try to retourqe the covers but instead remove them and have a good look over to find the issue. I,m hoping you can save the gaskets as they are 20 bucks just for the baffle to block gasket. Let me know If I can assist you with anything. Scincerely Maxz695
