Advice on removing a penta 4.3gl engine

I have a 02 Volvo Penta 4.3gl that received an early death from freeze up. I have the shops manuals which have been helpful so far. What I was looking for is clarification of a concern I have.

How is the engine connected to the transom mount? Should the bell housing be left on the transom mount or does it come out when the engine is ready to be pulled? I have pulled the leg unit off the boat already. The shop manual doesn't reference what I have to disconnect from the transom mount in order to remove the engine; at least in my reading of it.

With the leg removed, is there a physical connection of the engine to the transom mount that I need to disconnect in order to remove the engine?

Hopefully I have been clear enough in my explanation and questions; this is my first time posting to iboats.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

First remove the drive. Then, remove the two 1/2" nuts (3/4" socket) holding the bellhousing to the transom shield. Remove the 2 big washers also. Then remove the lag bolts that hold the front mounts to the stringers. (DO NOT remove the top nut off the motor mounts and leave the mount attached to stringer. Then disconnect all the hoses, cables, elecrical connections and lift it up and out.

Hello and good luck: I have pulled a couple of 4.3 engines. Actually, they are a lot easier to remove than a car engine. What I would recomend besides what Don and Bondo have, is take a lot of pictures of your wiring harness, and where it,s routed. I had more troubles routing this, than any other part. If you have any questions I can help with.

.

You don't take the wiring harness off the engine. It stays. just disconnect the main harness plug and remove the battery cables, and maybe a couple of extra small connectors.

Thanks to all that replied.

Engine came out with no problems. Now the expensive part; buying the replacement.

Again my thanks for all your helpful advice.
