Newbie looking at purchasing 115HP Tohatsu with controls and Multifunction Guage for 3000.00. Motor is clean with minor scratches on cowling and foot. Owner says compression is 148 on all cyl. and motor has been tuned for more hp (~140). Serial # is 21960. I am planning on mounting it on a 24' Seaark 2472MV Superjon. From my research it appears to be a 1999 model but owner thinks it is a early 2000 model. What should I look for or be aware of with these models? Is this a TLDI - I did not see it on the cowling? I am planning on taking a battery and gas tank to test the engine on my second visit. The engine in on a stand in his garage and the owner says that it was fogged when put up within last 12 months. I am planning on checking out the checklist I saw somewhere on iboats for buying used motors. Any advice welcomed.
Thanks,
Chip

Old style carb model. 1999, 115 hp anythings are worth around $1500.00 to $2000.00. The engine is 12 years old and anything over ten years should only be purchased as a "until it breaks engine".

Thanks for the quick reply Guru. Is it possible to boost the hp on these models with minor tuning? Is work on these models any easier due to the age or lack of fuel injection etc.

If it's a 2 stroker, depending on the serial, probably could update to a 120/140 HP, all 3 are 4 cylinder with 1,758 CC, will need to check engine possible restrictions : air restrictor plates, throttle cams, different carbs, different ignition timmings, check parts manual to see tech differences. Carbed engines are much easier to service than TLDI models as being less complex.

Thanks Sea Rider. Where is the best place to get a service manual? I have the PDF of the Owners Manual from the Tohatsu Website.

You can contact Paul (Pvanv) for a service manual, he or TG might know the technical issues involved to further update...

How can I find the operating hours on this motor?

Ask to see the previous owner's log book. :) Unlike the TLDI models, there isn't any way to get the running hours displayed on the tach, etc. Hours are less important than age/condition unless the motor was used commercially.

Thanks Paul,
If I end up buying the motor then I would like to purchase a service manual for it. I think you can supply that from what I have read. I will let you know how the demo goes.

Thanks,
Chip

Re: Advice on purchasing M115A2 3J6 on Craigslist

I have purchased the Tohatsu M115A2 3J6. The compression checked out 145-148 on all cyl. Motor cranked right up and water started flowing right out. The motor shifted into forward and reverse fine. I would like to purchase the Tohatsu Service Manual and some touchup paint. How is the best way to get in touch with Paul or TG.

Thanks,
Chip
